Sitting comfortably? Now think back to when you were young and you sat listening to your parents tell you a story that whisked you off to lands of adventure, fun and intrigue.

For as long as anyone can remember, stories have played a vital role in growing up – but what is it about being read to that makes it so special?

And when should you start reading to your kids?

Getting to spend some one-on-one time with mum or dad, gran or grandpa, aunt or uncle, is reason enough to pull out a book to read together.

Research has highlighted that reading a bedtime story to a baby can yield benefits for years to come, helping them understand words faster.

As children grow, and even after they can read themselves, reading together can help them improve their communication skills, their vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and their understanding of the world.

If you’re looking to inspire your kids and grandkids and need ideas on what books to buy, pop into Waterstones, The Works and WH Smith.

You can also borrow books from EK Library, situated in The Hub, EK.

Why not create your own stories to read together? You can pick up all your stationary needs in the centre from WH Smith, The Works, Waterstones, and Smiggle.

And you can enter our competition for your chance to win a £50 EK, East Kilbride gift card so you can treat the kids to some new reading material.

To be in with a chance of scooping this prize, fill in the coupon with your name, address and telephone number and send your entry to us by Monday at noon. All winners must agree to be photographed.

Good luck!
