Snow joke for hikers

- Terry McGeary

Our Lady of Lourdes Hiking Club members took a snowy walk through the Lammermuir Hills during their latest mystery outing.

The two groups headed off from the village of Stenton, initially on a common track through the gently undulating scenery south of Edinburgh.

They made their way towards a house that seemed to constitute St Agnes at the confluence of two rivers – one running from Whiteadder reservoir.

While the hikers followed a marginally lower track, they often found themselves stranded in cattle slurry and mud from vehicles serving the nearby Spartleton Wind Farm.

The higher level group found the luxury of road tracks to follow and, consequently, made very good time on their excursion.

Members battled through some sleet and snow while fog limited any views down to the reservoir.

A pleasant hour was spent in the extremely accommodating and comfortable Tweeddale Arms Hotel in Gifford before the groups made the trip back to East Kilbride.

From tomorrow, you can sign up for the next mystery walk at Our Lady of Lourdes RC church hall in The Murray.

Anyone wishing to give hillwalking a try will be made very welcome.
