I can’t forgive Sean for stealing hat-trick bid

-

Barry Russell has racked up an impressive string of achievements during 100 appearances for East Kilbride – but he still hasn’t forgiven Sean Winter for denying him a first-ever hat-trick.

From leading his side to an unforgettable Scottish Cup clash with Celtic and locking horns with his hero Scott Brown, to lifting the Lowland League title and breaking Ajax’s world record for consecutive wins, there has been plenty of accolades for Russell to enjoy.

However, the moment Winter denied him the chance of a memorable treble irks the EK skipper to this day.

During a 5-1 win away to Gretna last season, Barry bagged an early double before Kilby went on to win a late penalty.

The chance was there for the defender to claim the hat-trick, but it was taken away from him. “I’ll never forgive Sean for that,”he said. “I fell out with him for a bit over it. “I scored the first two within 20 minutes, but Sean was on a run where he’d scored in every game.

“He hadn’t got one in that game and then we got the penalty.

“I was desperate to take it, but Sean wouldn’t let me.

“Yes I’m the captain, but I had no say in the matter with Sean. He always wants to score.

“That would have been my first career hat-trick and probably my first since I was playing seven-a-side.

“We still talk about it and, at least, we can have a bit of laugh about it now.

“Luckily enough he did score, but if that happens again I’ll be hitting it.”
