Tragic Robert’s parents will never give up fight

- Colin Paterson

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.

For almost seven years, the parents of late RAF firefighter Robert Fleeting have been fighting to find out exactly what happened when he died at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

But during this time, Charles and Susan have been banging their heads off a brick wall, unable to get the answers they deserve and are entitled to.

Last Tuesday night, as the centenary of the RAF was marked at South Lanarkshire Council’s Hamilton headquarters, the family protested, delivering a simple yet cutting message.

For the RAF’s 100 years, they have 100 questions – you can read the full story on pages 4 and 5 of today’s paper.

Charles and Susan have long suspected that Robert did not take his own life, as has been concluded, and believe the RAF and Thames Valley Police are responsible for a cover-up.

The couple’s ‘Justice for Robert’ campaign has achieved worldwide support from thousands of people and as well as seeking their own answers, they want all non-combat deaths on a military base to be heard by a jury.

They have the support of East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP Dr Lisa Cameron who is “disgusted” at their treatment from Thames Valley Police.

Charles and Susan will continue to fight for answers, for justice, in their son’s memory and we will continue to tell their story.

Elsewhere in the paper, there was plenty of reaction to Kingsgate Retail Park’s decision to issue fines if shoppers overstay their welcome in the car park.
