Windrush debate support
Dr Lisa Cameron MP has supported calls for a backbench debate to mark the 70th anniversary of the Windrush arrivals.
The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP is backing colleagues who want to discuss Empire Windrush’s arrival at Tilbury Docks, Essex.
The ship brought passengers from the Caribbean who had responded to the call from the UK Government for assistance with reconstruction after the Second World War.
Dr Cameron has also co-signed an Early Day Motion asking the UK Government to formally mark June 22 as Windrush Day.
Her comments come following the Windrush generation scandal in which hundreds of people who moved here have discovered their migration status could be challenged.
The fallout has seen home secretary Amber Rudd quit over what she knew about the existence of deportation targets within her department. Sajid Javid replaced her on Monday.
“This debate is needed to acknowledge with respect and gratitude the enormous and ongoing contribution that members of the Windrush generation have made to the UK on this important anniversary,” Dr Cameron told the News.
“I hope the UK Government and the newly formed Home Office task force can resolve issues the for all families involved and ensure that the hostile environment they have created for migrants in the UK can be swiftly reversed.
“It is important to stand in solidarity with this community and other commonwealth migrants that have worked hard for our country and are a part of a social fabric.”
