Inspired by her fiancé

- Andrea O’Neill

A fundraising mum raised £125 for two charities close to her heart – with the help of her colleagues from Maxwellton and Greenburn primary schools.

Teaching assistant Ruth Miller told the News she was inspired to ‘wear purple’ and hold a bake sale for Epilepsy Awareness Day as her fiancé James Moore has suffered from the condition since his teens.

She told the News: “My fiancé James was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 17. He is now 43 and manages to keep it well controlled with medication.

“He holds down a full-time job with the council as a day centre worker with the elderly.

“He is my inspiration and he never complains about his condition – he accepts it and loves life.

“We raise money for Epilepsy Scotland and Epilepsy Connections on a regular basis between our Christmas lights fundraiser and Epilepsy Awareness Day. All the staff at Maxwellton and Greenburn helped contribute to this wonderful charity.”

Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26 annually, people in countries around the globe are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness.

Local businesses also banded together for the cause.

Sausage rolls were donated by Wright’s the Butchers, So Juicy donated wraps, crisps and sweets for the kids, the Village Co-op donated fruit, bread and crisps and the Blue Rupee donated pakora.

Ruth added: “I want to say a huge thank you to all the local businesses that supported us and to all the staff at my school for all the support they have shown me today. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of people. It’s nice to know that there is a lot of people with huge hearts still out there.”
