Popular fundraisers

East Kilbride’s firefighters are searching for causes that could benefit from their hugely popular charity plant sale.

Crews at the Andrew Street fire station are now taking applications for this year’s event and want local groups to get in touch.

However, before then folk in the town can lather up at the charity car wash this Saturday and Sunday at the fire station.

Firefighters will be on hand to clean your vehicle in return for a donation to their chosen charities.

Meanwhile, the plant sale, which will take place on Saturday, May 19, is a popular event and the money raised will be split between the National Fire Fighters Charity (formerly the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund) and other groups.

Over the years around £40,000 has been raised by East Kilbride fire station which has seen people flock to the sale.

It attracts hundreds of gardeners every year and has a wide selection of plants, shrubs and baskets. There will also be a tombola to boost the overall total.

On the day there will be an opportunity for members of the public to obtain fire safety advice from the town’s firefighters and the kids can hop on board a fire engine.

Anyone who is involved in or knows someone within a local group that would benefit from the plant sale fund, is being encouraged to apply to the fire station with application forms now available.

East Kilbride’s fire and rescue service is unable to help every applicant.

However, they will try to spread their support to as many different groups as possible.

Local businesses who can donate a prize for the tombola are being encouraged to get in touch.

Call the fire station on (01355) 222222 for more information.
