Montrose rose to the occasion
Claremont Rambling Club couldn’t have been luckier with the weather for their annual walking weekend.
Montrose on the Angus coast was this year’s destination.
As per the usual routine, there were two walks on the Saturday for those of different abilities plus one on the Sunday where everyone, if they wished, could take part.
The Saturday long walk was Invermark (Loch Lee) – the Falls of Unich (seven miles) and those wishing a longer excursion continued on to the Falls of Damff (10 miles). Both were in-and-out walks. An alternative walk of seven miles followed roughly the shape of a figure 9 on Montrose Bay; beautiful sands.
This route had an interesting history lesson regards World War II.
The first part of the walk was on Cycle Route 1 which had been used as an air strip during the war.
Added to this there were still many of the concrete blocks remaining which had been installed at the time to prevent an incursion on our shores; these were along the River Esk in various stages of erosion.
Both walks had absolutely brilliant weather.
The Sunday outing was 4.5 miles from the Rocks of Solitude back to the village of Edzell. Conditions were, unfortunately, less kind and jackets were required to keep the showers off.
For the weekend, the club stayed in the extremely comfortable Park Hotel where accommodation, food and staff were par excellence.
From Edzell, the members continued on to Stirling where they enjoyed a high tea in Cooks of Stirling, rounding off a first-class weekend, which had been enjoyed in good weather and the best of company.
The next scheduled walk will be on Sunday, May 6 with the destination being Penicuik to Lasswade.
And the next club meeting is on Tuesday, May 8 in the usual venue of Claremont Church’s small hall at 7.30pm.
The speaker will be Ken Crammond, whose subject will be international rescue.
Individuals wishing to join either walks or club nights can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome.
