An MSP’s survey suggests people want a new car park at Hairmyres train station on the other side of the rail track.
Central Scotland Tory list MSP Graham Simpson believes his unofficial poll, which generated 50 responses, showed “overwhelming support” for a new park-and-ride facility.
Mr Simpson leafleted the area to gauge views on the four parking options put for ward as part of a formal consultation.
The construction of a new surface car park with an access road just off Peel Park, which could create 109 spaces at a cost of up to £420,000, was the preferred choice of 67 per cent of the people who responded to his survey.
South Lanarkshire Council and its partners have been conducting their own consultation on four options, which also include creating 11 new space sat the existing car park at a cost of up to £50,000.
An extra 357 spaces could come from a decked hospital car park in a partnership with health chiefs – costing up to £4.5 million.
Another choice could add 50 spaces with a decked extension of the car park at a cost of between £500,000 and £642,000.
“I felt it important to make sure those who were unaware or didn’t have access to the online survey had a voice,” Mr Simpson said.
“The re s i dents have s poken loud and clear and are backing the proposal to build a brand new car park near Peel Park on the other side of the line from the station.
“The result was overwhelming: 67 per cent of those who took the time to reply indicated that their prepared option was for a new park-and-ride car park to be built – option two on the SLC survey.
“There appears to be little appetite for the other options on the table. I will be writing to SLC to make sure these local opinions are taken into account.”
