Would you pay more tax to fund the NHS?

News readers have their say on big issue

Latest figures have revealed that NHS treatment time performance is at a record low.

A quarter of eligible NHS patients are not being treated within a legally-binding timescale, the statistics have shown.

Planned in-patient and day care treatment must start within 12 weeks under the Scottish Government’s Treatment Time Guarantee (TTG).

With demand for NHS ser vices rocketing and a think-tank estimating every household in Britain will need to pay an extra £2000 a year in tax to maintain services, we asked folk in East Kilbride if they would be willing to put their hand in their pocket.

Westwood’s Christine Campbell said: “I am retired now but I think I would have paid more tax for the NHS. It can’t cope with current funding.”

Ravi Singhal from Stewartfield said: “I would pay more – I think it’s important that it’s properly funded.”

However, Ross Quigley from the Village said: “It’s difficult because the NHS probably does need more cash and nurses are having to do more and more but I don’t think taxpayers should be hit in the pocket.”

And Keith Macgill from the Village said: “We are so heavily taxed in other areas I believe the extra cash needed for the NHS could be diverted from elsewhere, such as foreign aid.”
