Petition to save M&S Pensioner Mary Matthews is among those vowing to take on Marks & Spencer in a bid to try and stop the doors of the Plaza store closing and save 67 jobs.

East Kilbride News online readers continued to have their say following the retail giant’s shock announcement that the East Kilbride outlet faces the axe.

Doreen Clarke said: “I always use M&S, especially to buy my gluten-free food. I feel sorry for the locals who shop there without a car, for food or clothes.”

Stacy Meldrum posted: “So many older people are going to be gutted about this. I know my wee gran is.

“Some people dont realise how much of a hugely bad move this is for the town centre but it will be apparent when it actually closes.”

Karen Beattie wrote: “Stop the parking charges and increase footfall in the town centre. Simple!”

Anne Weir-mcgregor posted: “For the size of East Kilbride, its M&S is dull and drab. It needs larger premises with a bit of va va voom.

“It would be better turning that shop into M&S (at home) as there’s not a lot of choice.”

Mary Naismith said:“The store is too large for the amount of customers it now has. No need to lose it, just get them to downsize and keep it in EK.”

Diane Bree said: “A protest won’t make people use it now.

“Businesses can’t sustain losses. Business rates are astronomical, parking charges are a thorn in the side of our residents.”
