Will you be watching the 2018 World Cup?

News readers make their predictions

- Andrea O’Neill

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in host country Russia tomorrow.

Reigning champions Germany will be looking to defend their title while Iceland and Panama will be making their first appearances in the summer tournament which sees 64 matches played in 12 venues across 11 cities.

The News took to the streets of East Kilbride to ask local folk if they will be watching the month-long global event – and who they think will lift the trophy.

Thomas Spence, 52, of St Leonards said: “I predict Spain to win. I’d like anyone bar England to make it through the first round. I’m looking forward to a month of football – a few beer gardens will be getting hit!”

Jim Smillie, 62, of The Murray said: “Belgium to win, they have good players. The wife’s English – I’m not going to say anything more about that.”

Jim’s wife Pam Walsh, 65, added: “I’m a Rangers fan so I’m interested in watching the World Cup. I’ll watch all the England games but if Scotland had made it through I would have supported them over England. “I think Belgium will win it.” Graham Millar, 53, also of The Murray said: “Brazil for me, they are the best team. But the hosts usually do well so maybe Russia. “If I’m not working I’ll be watching in the pub. “I’m curious to see how England do with their brand new squad – as long as they don’t win it.

“Just like last time, we’ll never hear the end of it!”

I’m curious to see how England do – as long as they don’t win it. Graham Millar
