Josh hopes victory can boost Scots cricket

-

East Kilbride Cricket Club vice-captain Josh Johnston reckons Scotland’s stunning win over England can breathe new life into the domestic game across the nation.

And the 28-year-old feels the next generation will be inspired after the Dark Blues toppled the No 1 one-day side in the world.

Scotland pulled off an incredible victory at The Grange in Edinburgh – beating Eoin Morgan’s star-studded team by six runs.

Callum MacLeod’s 140 not out helped Scotland to a total of 371 for 5 with England bowled out for 365, despite Jonny Bairstow’s 105.

Johnston watched nervously on Sunday as Scotland held on and believes it can be the dawn of a new era for the sport.

He said: “It was brilliant and most of the guys involved are players I know and have played against at club level.

“If either team had won the game, it was going to be a part of history.

“England had a long batting line-up but credit to our guys.”

Johnston added: “In terms of young players, it’s about getting them interested and getting them down to the club.

“Players of my age started playing cricket when we were nine or 10 and results like Sunday’s can only help us attract the next generation.

“We have All Stars at East Kilbride. Last year we had 15 to 20 kids. This year we’ve got 30 to 50. It’s improving.”
