£10k makeover by club’s dream team Volunteers bring own skills to upgrade sports bar

East Kilbride Sports Club proved that teamwork makes the dream work after they unveiled a £10,000 makeover of their small bar.

The Calderglen hub, which plays host to the town’s rugby, cricket and tennis clubs as well as Calderglen Harriers and Torrance House Golf Club, has received a much-needed facelift after a year of fundraising efforts.

It has been nearly 20 years since the last upgrade and, over the past six weeks, a group of volunteers chipped in to lighten the load as the cash was put to good use.

They helped install new carpets, HD televisions and lighting while the entire bar area has been revamped with new upholstery and wallpaper.

East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmhagow MP Dr Lisa Cameron was the guest of honour as she officially opened the new-look bar – and the sports club hope it will attract more members through their doors.

President Brian Kampman said “This work was well overdue and now we have a modern facility for our club members to use and enjoy.

“We knew the place was needing a makeover.

“We raised a considerable amount of money in three or four functions here and our social member Gordon Cafferty made a substantial contribution, so between the two of us that allowed this project to happen.

“It’s a much more inviting and pleasant place to spend time in.”

Mr Kampman added: “We’ve had about 10 to 15 volunteers who have worked away.

“Each of them have their own specialities from woodwork to plastering and they’ve been instrumental in keeping the costs down, so we have to thank them for that.

“All sections have been involved to greater or larger extents.

“I’m not a builder but it probably would have cost us twice as much without them.”

Mr Kampman also praised the efforts of Mr Cafferty who raised £2750 throughout last winter holding raffles to raise money for a new carpet.

He added: “Gordon has to take credit for his voluntary work to allow the project to happen and I would like to say a big thank you to him.”

The club now hope to turn their efforts towards improving the main bar area with remedial works planned for the car park.
