DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION
Motorists warned of delay son roads
Traffic disruption looks set to affect motorists in Avondale next week due to roadworks on the A71.
Overnight closures will be put in place between Stonehouse and Canderside Toll – with the diversion route through Strathaven and Hamilton.
Resurfacing work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am during six evenings from this Sunday to Saturday, September 15.
And motorists looking to access the M74 will be facing a detour.
South Lanarkshire Council have apologised ahead of the project for the “unavoidable inconvenience”.
Gordon Mackay, the head of roads and transportation, said: “We recognise that this is an important road link for road users in the wider area.
“These overnight closures have been planned to ensure that this resurfacing work can be completed safely while causing the least possible disruption.
“We will do everything we can to maintain access to local properties during the closure periods and we apologise in advance for the unavoidable inconvenience this important maintenance work will cause.”
Drivers have been encouraged to allow additional time for making journeys which would involve the Stonehouse to Canderside Toll section of the A71. The diversion from Stonehouse will be to take the A71 to Strathaven, follow the A723 from Strathaven to Hamilton, the A72 Carlisle Road from Hamilton to Larkhall and the B7078 through Larkhall to reach Canderside Toll. It is the same route in the reverse direction.
Meanwhile, motorists are reminded that Common Green will be closed between 12noon and 5pm on Sunday for a Year of Young People 2018 celebration event.
We recognise this is an important road link in the wider area.
