Politicians will be held to account over Brexit
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.
You may have noticed the latest tranche of notices published by the UK Government in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
These covered matters such as roaming charges when using your mobile phone in EU countries and what type of driving licence you will need if motoring along in the likes of France and Spain.
Naturally, there is likely to be a price to pay although you would not have found information such as this on the side of a double-decker bus.
While this was going on, the hard Brexit Tory MPs who make up the European Research Group (ERG) were holding court, discussing their fantasy land economic outlook and suggestions for avoiding a hard border in Northern Ireland.
They do not approve, shall we say, of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Chequers plan but have shelved their own alternative blueprint.
Taking back control? This lot need to take some responsibility.
All of what is going on must be viewed in the context of a tough negotiation with both sides not wishing to show their hand or compromise until the very final moments. It seems inconceivable that the UK will crash out of the EU on March 29 with no agreements in place but then we are living in truly incredible times.
However, the reality is we are six months away from departing and the only credible plan is one drafted by an under-fire Prime Minister which is hated by Leavers and Remainers.
It’s a shambles and the politicians and parties presiding over this debacle should be in no doubt that, one day, they will be held to account.
