Is Boris Johnson fit to be leader of country?

News readers have their say on big issue

- Nicola Findlay

Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson has been condemned after comparing Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan for Brexit to putting the country’s constitution in a “suicide vest” and handing the detonator to the European Union.

The Tory toff also landed himself in hot water after saying Muslim women who wear the niqab “look like letterboxes” and resemble “a bank robber”.

With continued pressure on Mrs May and speculation that Mr Johnson wants to mount a leadership challenge, the News asked shoppers in East Kilbride if they thought he was fit to lead the country.

Mark Hosey from West Mains said: “Not under any circumstances but I’ve a low opinion of our MPs – they are all career politicians and no one represents the people or the common man.”

Meanwhile, Mairi McCluskey from Greenhills said: “I would hope not – he is out of his box and has absolutely no filter.”

Robert Gardner from St Leonards said: “The man is an idiot – he isn’t fit to be an MP never mind a leader.”

And Alan Dryburgh from Mossneuk added: “He would be an absolute disaster and a national embarrassment.

“How he was ever allowed to become foreign secretary is beyond me.

“Talk about a clown, he’s more like Billy Bunter.”
