Morning club launch

- Nicola Findlay

Pupils at an East Kilbride primary have an appetite for learning after joining their school breakfast club.

The new club has been launched by the town’s St Andrew’s Methodist Church and East Kilbride South councillor Fiona Dryburgh.

A team of volunteers will run the club with 20 pupils signed up and another 20 due to join.

And it has already proved to be a smash hit with youngsters.

Greenhills Primary head teacher Elaine Johnston said: “It is a great start to the day. Children are on time and ready to learn.

“I think this is a fantastic initiative, bringing together adults from the church and community with the school children and it is great to hear the lively chatter of children enjoying breakfast together.”

Councillor Dryburgh told the News: “I worked with the Machan Trust in Larkhall and thought that their breakfast club model was second to none.

“Any parent will tell you that it is not always easy to get a child to eat breakfast in the morning – but we all eat more when we socialise together. It is free of charge and open to all pupils in the school.”

Laurent Vernet, the new minister at St Andrew’s Methodist Church was delighted to get involved on his first day in the job.

“It is great to sit and chat with the children as they eat breakfast, colour in and draw together after they finish eating,” he said.

“I’m glad that parents are able to go to college or work secure in the knowledge that their children are having breakfast and are safe.”

Church member Clare Purfit added: “We’re grateful to South Lanarkshire Council for providing some start-up funding for the project and we’re delighted at the ongoing support received from Morrisons and Scotmid who have been very generous in supplying vouchers to help buy food.”
