Body shop petition
A campaign to ban animal testing in cosmetics globally was given the backing of Dr Lisa Cameron.
The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP visited The Body Shop in East Kilbride to sign a petition for the Forever Against Animal Testing campaign which has been organised by the cosmetics firm and Cruelty Free International.
Dr Cameron is a keen advocate of animal rights, supporting many causes in this area, and the petition has secured a massive eight million signatures worldwide.
Over 80 per cent of countries still have no laws against testing in cosmetic products and ingredients despite the fact that reliable alternatives are available.
Cruelty Free International estimates that more than 500,000 animals are used worldwide in cosmetics testing each year.
The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International are calling for a ban on animal testing in cosmetic products and ingredients through a United Nations International Convention, as well as changes to domestic laws.
Janette McKenna, senior team leader at the East Kilbride Body Shop store, told the News: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Dr Lisa Cameron MP to the store and have her support the campaign. The campaign has reached the eight million signatures mark and the petition will be handed to the UN soon.
“Having people in power like Dr Cameron actually back the campaign really helps to get the message out there.”
Dr Cameron said: “I am a longtime supporter of the campaign for a worldwide ban on cosmetic animal testing. I led the debate in Parliament on this issue and I am now very proud to support the Body Shop and Cruelty Free International’s petition in our local Body Shop store.”
