- Andrea Lambrou

Provost Ian McAllan met some furry friends at the opening of East Kilbride’s new Pets at Home store – which has created 15 jobs.

While on official ribbon cutting duties, the provost was given a tour of the outlet, which includes a pet salon.

The News previously told how the new 10,000sq ft store at at Howard Avenue in Nerston received more than 332 job applications for the new posts.

And store manager Andy Fox insists they couldn’t have wished for a better start to life in the town.

He said: “Our opening weekend went even better than we had hoped and it was great to welcome our local provost and show him the new amenities that we have on offer at the store.

“Our new store features thousands of dedicated pet products for not only dogs and cats but small animals, fish and local wildlife too.” He added: “We have also created 15 jobs for the community across a range of full-time and part-time positions.”

All staff at the new store will receive extensive training on pet care and pet knowledge which is endorsed by City & Guilds, providing a stamp of approval that demonstrates the value of its training.

Provost McAllan said following his visit: “We are pleased to welcome Pets at Home to the local area, which will contribute to the East Kilbride shopping park and bring more shopping options to the area.”

The store is home to an adoption centre, run by independent charity Support Adoption For Pets.

This is where pets – including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small animals – are cared for until a new loving home can be found for them.

There is also a fully-equipped Vets4Pets veterinary surgery, an aquatics centre and groom room.
