Concerns over retail plan
Dear Editor,
To say that the proposed retail development at Peel Park will not be harmful to other retailers in East Kilbride town centre, Kingsgate Retail Park and other shopping areas is incorrect (£35m retail plan for Peel Park site, September 12).
The merchandise that they would offer for sale can be purchased at this time by other retailers in the town centre and elsewhere.
In opening a new store – a process in which I have twice been involved in – a great deal of advertising will take place with considerable emphasis on sales figures to reach a break-even figure to recoup internal outlay cost of merchandise staff, wages, heating and lighting.
If that achieves the desired effect, it could result in a reduction in custom of other retailers.
Meanwhile, it’s also worth considering how we will leave the European Union; with a deal or with no deal.
Joe Allan, Westwood Upholdingdemocracy Dear Editor,
So Councillor Robert Brown thinks it is time for a People’s Vote (Time for a People’s Vote, August 29).
What is it with politicans who don’t know what democracy means?
It seems democracy only applies to some individuals as long as you agree with them.
So let’s look at all our political parties’ performance since the vote to be free from a ‘United States of Europe’.
The Tories – hell bent on beating each other up over Europe as they have been for the last 30 years.
The Labour Party (oh, Jeremy Corbyn, why did you change your mind?).
They still don’t know were they stand on Europe.
The SNP – dear oh dear, lost the plot totally. The Liberal Democrats – they want a Brexit from Brexit; laughable.
And finally, UKIP – talk about a party hitting the self-destruct button.
So who do we vote for at the next election? I personally don’t have a clue so I will vote for an individual who upholds democracy because that is what this country is – not some sort of tinpot state were the elite run the country and we all tag along like nodding dogs.
