Fans of the Purge series – which I have enjoyed – are sure to lap up this entertaining-but-downbeat prequel and its examination of divisive real-life politics.
But, for everyone else, the lack of subtlety, characters’ silly decisionmaking and shaky ideology will leave then hoping The First Purge is also the last. Wow, where to begin with this one? Despite glowing reviews, I found the latest crazed Nicolas Cage showcase a chore to sit through.
Sure it’s visually impressive and unlike most films you’ll sit through most years. However, the end result is more pretentious, odd and frustrating than an example of inventive filmmaking.
