Former landfill project
£1m for Glen Esk
New life could be breathed into a former landfill site in East Kilbride thanks to a £1 million grant.
Consultations have been organised to gauge the public’s view on plans for the site at Glen Esk, including keeping the area as a managed natural open space. The cash has been secured by South Lanarkshire Council.
Concerns had been raised on the possible impact to wildlife after a planning notice was submitted to develop the land – although a formal application hasn’t been submitted.
The council’s head of planning and economic development Pauline Elliott said: “We made a successful application to the Scottish Government’s vacant and derelict land fund and been awarded £1m to support environmental improvements at the Glen Esk site, which will protect and improve the quality of the existing greenspace and offer residents opportunities to make better use of the area.
“We organised consultation events to take place to offer local people and organisations an opportunity to share their ideas and get involved.
“Ecological and habitat surveys have been carried out and will inform development of proposals to ensure existing plant and animal species will not be adversely affected, where possible habitat will be enhanced to encourage biodiversity.”
A consultation will be held from 6pm to 8pm tonight at St Leonard’s Primary School; tomorrow from 10am to 12.30pm at St Leonard’s Church and from 2pm to 5pm in the shopping centre. SupportFAMS
