Award

They have shown a genuine commitment to encouraging businesses to pay staff the Living Wage.

That’s the message from Living Wage Scotland after South Lanarkshire Council picked up a top award.

Council representatives collected the Living Wage Scotland 2018 Anchor Institution Award.

The category is open to all accredited Living Wage employers who are recognised as major employers within their local area.

And the award was presented during Living Wage Week 2018 at the Living Wage Expo and awards ceremony in Edinburgh.

South Lanarkshire Council has been paying the Living Wage for seven years – and been an accredited Living Wage employer since 2016.

Now the local authority’s efforts have been praised by Living Wage Scotland manager Julie McGahan.

She said: “South Lanarkshire Council has demonstrated a genuine, continued commitment to increasing the profile and take up of the real Living Wage across South Lanarkshire.

“And their efforts have encouraged both small and large employers in the region to become accredited as Living Wage employers, benefiting thousands of workers.”

Council depute leader Maureen Chalmers added: “We are absolutely delighted that our commitment to the Living Wage has been recognised and we have won this award.

“We recognise our influence extends beyond our own organisation and as such have been championing the Living Wage across all sectors of the local economy and beyond.

“Independent studies have found that the majority of employers believe that paying the Living Wage enhances the quality of the work of their staff while also reducing absenteeism.”
