PARKING PROBLEM
Permit zones consultation
People in East Kilbride are being urged to take part in a parking permits consultation which could see streets near Hairmyres railway station off limits to non-residents.
The survey will focus on residential areas near Hairmyres railway station with a similar canvassing of views taking place in relation to the station at Cambuslang.
And it forms part of a wider review into Residential Parking Permit Zones (RPPZs) across South Lanarkshire.
Residents living near Hairmyres station have been left brassed off with cars blocking drives as motorists are unable to find space at the park-and-ride facility.
And with car parks at University Hospital Hairmyres also jammed, staff, patients and visitors are often forced to abandon their motors in nearby streets.
Responses will be analysed and a formal consultation process will begin should South Lanarkshire Council push forward with introducing RPPZs.
East Kilbride Central South councillor John Anderson admitted there are “significant issues” with parking in and around Hairmyres and Cambuslang stations as he invited folk to have their say.
The chair of the community and enterprise resources committee said: “We are aware that in many areas parking pressures continue to increase, which is the reason why we decided to review all RPPZs.
“We also recognise that there are significant issues with parking in and around both Hairmyres and Cambuslang railway stations.
“That is why I am encouraging as many people as possible who live in both these areas, or use them, to take part in the surveys.
“Your input into this process is invaluable and will help us to decide the best course of action moving forward.”
Councillor Anderson added: “As well as the online questionnaire, we will also be consulting with community councils, business groups and other council partners.”
The consultation will run for eight weeks until the end of January 2019.

Last week’s News told how NHS Lanarkshire plan to bring in a parking management system next year to put the brakes on commuters using the site as a free park-and-ride facility.
Meanwhile, a consultation opened earlier this year which looked at options for increasing capacity at Hairmyres railway station.
