Karate kids win medals:

Members of East Kilbride’s Kihonkai Karate Academy claimed a tremendous 34-medal haul at the UK Championsh­ips in Blackburn recently.

The youngsters, who train at Duncanrig Sports Centre, returned home with 15 gold, six silver and 13 bronze medals.

Coach Stevie Mason said: “I was delighted with the junior team’s success.

“The kids, the coaching team and parents enjoyed travelling down spending time together and supporting each other.”

Prizewinne­rs were as follows: Gold: Caitlyn Tops, 12 years Kata and Kumite; Charlie Mason, 11 years Kata; Corey Stevenson, 12 years Kumite; Erin Mitchell, 13 years Team Kata; Fraser Hanney, 10 years Kata and Team Kata; Jessica Gailey, 14 years Kata, Kumite and Team Kata; Z hara Wells ,13 years K at a and Ku mi te (2); Cameron Savage ,10 years K at a and Ku mi te.

Silver: Chloe McAulay, 15 years Kata; Corey Stevenson 15 years Kata, Kumite and Team Kata; Erin Mitchell, 13 years Kata; Lauren Blair, 17 years Kumite.

Bronze: Ailish McBean, six years Kumite and Tough Kid Challenge; Charlie Mason, 11 years Tough Kid Challenge; Chloe McAualy, 15 years Kumite; Erin Mitchell, 13 years Kata, Kumite and Tough Kid Challenge; Johnny Probin, 12 years Kumite; Lauren Blair, 12 years Kata, Lynnie McIver, 12 years Kata and Kumite, Olivia McAulay, 10 years Kata, Zak Rowan, 10 years Kata.

The club are now starting a training programme for the KWF World Cup in Tokyo next year, which will take place in their new custom-built training centre in College Milton.
