Gorgeous Flash left for dead

Hit-and-run driver fails to stop after hitting family pet

- FRASER WILSON

A heartbroken mother has told how she was left to console her seven-yearold son after the family dog was killed by a hitand-run driver.

Now Ashly McEwan has urged the driver of the van that struck her five-year-old pooch to give himself up.

Poodle/schnauzer cross, Flash, was struck by the white van just before 6pm on Monday night – but the driver failed to stop.

Ashly, from Greenhills, told how she and boyfriend Ryan tried in vain to save the much-loved dog, but it had been too badly injured.

The 26-year-old told the News: “It was really windy and the gate had blown open.

“I saw the dog run out and went after it, but then all I heard was this thud – it was like three big bumps, and I saw him under the wheels of the van.

“But the driver never stopped, he just drove on. Ryan chased after him, shouting, but he just drove on.”

Brave Flash made one final last-ditch dash for safety, running home to the family flat on adrenaline.

When he got there, Ryan picked him up, but the pet died in his arms.

The incident happened around 5.50pm on Cedar Street and has left seven-year-old Stuart Robinson, Ashly’s son, struggling to comprehend what has happened.

She added: “We’re not angry at the driver for hitting the dog – these things happen unfortunately.

“But we’re really angry that he didn’t stop, especially when Ryan chased after him. He must have known he had hit something.”

Ashly said the van was white, with black and orange stickers over the rear-door windows.

She thought it was a Vauxhall and has reported the matter to the police.

“Stuart is pretty distraught to be honest,” Ashly added. “I’m not sure he really comprehends what’s going on.”
