Thorntons closure
Thorntons became the latest retailer to quit the town centre at the weekend with the loss of eight jobs.
The company is undergoing a period of restructuring leading to a number of store closures across the country.
A note was posted on the door of the Southgate shop on Saturday to notify customers.
A Ferrero spokeswoman said: “Like any retailer, we are continuously reviewing our store estate to ensure we are in the locations that meet our customer needs. As a result of such a review, the decision was taken to close the store at East Kilbride on January 5, 2019.
“Currently, eight staff members are employed at the store and we are looking to find them other employment opportunities where possible.“
The closure comes just weeks after we revealed the Filling Station in the Hub had pulled down its shutters too.
A spokesman for EK, East Kilbride, said: “We are clearly disappointed to see Thorntons close its doors here.
“The retailer has had a presence in the centre for a number of years.”
