Stu­dent makes the fi­nal

A stu­dent from an East Kil­bride school has been named as a fi­nal­ist in a UK-wide science and en­gi­neer­ing com­pe­ti­tion.

Marc Caf­frey, who is in S6 at Calder­glen High School, will now show­case his project at The Big Bang UK Young Sci­en­tists & Engi­neers Com­pe­ti­tion.

Marc was an­nounced as one of the win­ners of the on­line heats at The Big Bang Fair thanks to his project ‘Do Serengeti Sea­sons Change the Iso­tope Val­ues of Grass’, which looks at sea­sonal im­pact on wilde­beest mi­gra­tion.

Beth El­good, di­rec­tor of com­mu­ni­ca­tions at En­gi­neer­ing UK, said: “Marc from Calder­glen High School re­ally im­pressed the judges with their project and we’re ex­cited to see how they do at the fi­nals at The Fair.

“Go­ing into its tenth year in 2018, The Big Bang Fair con­tin­ues to be a great source of STEM in­spi­ra­tion for young peo­ple, rep­re­sent­ing an amaz­ing op­por­tu­nity for young vis­i­tors, their teach­ers and par­ents to get hands-on with a wide range of ac­tiv­i­ties, work­shops and shows, and en­gage in mean­ing­ful ca­reer con­ver­sa­tions with pro­fes­sion­als, all de­signed to bring class­room learn­ing to life and in­spire the next gen­er­a­tion.”

Marc will at­tend the com­pe­ti­tion fi­nals at the Big Bang Fair at Birm­ing­ham’s NEC in March, where he will com­pete for the UK Young En­gi­neer and GSK UK Young Sci­en­tist of the Year ti­tle.
