Volunteer needed to take the wheel

A vital not-for-profit organisation has launched a last-ditch appeal for a new chairperson.

The East Kilbride Community Transport (EKCT) helps keep hundreds of people on the move throughout the area each week.

That includes those with no access to public transport because of availability, accessibility, affordability or safety and security concerns.

But, the groups chairwoman and founder, Ina Cumming is to step down after 35 years of service.

Now members are asking for anyone with managerial or transport experience to help run the charity on a voluntary basis –and if they can’t find anyonw soon, the charity will fold.

Members of the group will meet alongside the Murray Community Council group at 7pm on Thursday (January 10) in the Murray Owen Centre, in what will be one of Ina’s last meetings.

The group offers assistance to local primary and secondary schools, youth groups, church groups, women’s guilds, sheltered housing and care homes and groups with additional support needs, offering up solutions to their transport needs.

In August, they were given a cash boost from CALA Homes to help keep them on the move.

Anyone interested in helping with the charity should contact June Harpum or Ina on 01355 224 972. Locals worried they may have overdone it during the festive period are being encouraged to sign up to help a leading charity.

The Stroke Association have put together three ‘resolution runs’ across Scotland starting next month – and that includes one in Glasgow.

Now the charity is asking East Kilbride residents who have set themselves the goal of getting fitter in 2019, to sign-up and take part.

And in doing so, they would not only help the charity, but help reduce their risks of stroke.

Professor Robinson says that moderate walking to intense jogging, cycling, or other physical activity can “significantly reduce your stroke risk”.

The ‘resolution runs’ include 5K and 10K events and whether you run, jog or walk the route, support will be on hand every step of the way.

You can sign up to take part by heading to www. resolutionrun.org.uk.
