East Kilbride District looked set to have the highest poll tax figure in Scotland. A document which was set to be distributed at a public meeting showed that the district element of the community charge was set to be around £99. Coupled with the regional rate for Strathclyde of £219, this meant that East Kilbride was set to pay £318 for their poll tax in 1989/90.
American Multi-Cinema (AMC) which had been tipped to run a new ninescreen cinema, pulled out of the UK and sold all of their assets. After pioneering the development of multiplex cinemas in the UK, AMC sold out to the CIC Theatre Group and United Artists Communications in a multi-million pound deal.
