East Kilbride District looked set to have the highest poll tax figure in Scotland. A document which was set to be distribute­d at a public meeting showed that the district element of the community charge was set to be around £99. Coupled with the regional rate for Strathclyd­e of £219, this meant that East Kilbride was set to pay £318 for their poll tax in 1989/90.

American Multi-Cinema (AMC) which had been tipped to run a new ninescreen cinema, pulled out of the UK and sold all of their assets. After pioneering the developmen­t of multiplex cinemas in the UK, AMC sold out to the CIC Theatre Group and United Artists Communicat­ions in a multi-million pound deal.

Little Daniel Monaghan was born on New Year’s day weighing seven pounds three ounces to mum, Marie, from Greenhills.
