Public input on road plans

Strathaven Community Council are set to put new plans for roads in the town to locals.

The community council transport sub-committee have met with SLC transport officers and have agreed to look at an overhaul of several routes in the town.

These include a change of weight limit on Thomson Street to 7.5 tonnes excluding buses, with a possible future run out to North Street.

Further discussions are also set to take place on changes to the controversial Hamilton Road, Commercial Road, and Glassford Road junction were held with South Lanarkshire Council.

The Community Council have revealed the current recorded accidents with injury stands at two.

The possibility of creating a one-way system of entry and exit to Common Green via Wellbrae and Bridge Street respectively was put forward, and the public will now be asked for their views on the changes,

Sub-committee member Les Hoggan told the News that a traffic consultation document had been created and would be available to residents.

Les added:“We have a few ideas and now we need to prove that they have the community support to get them out there.”

Head of Roads and Transportation Services, Gordon Mackay, added: “We have previously had very positive discussions with the transport sub-committee of Strathaven Community Council.

“Our suggestion to them was that they discussed with the community any potential changes to roads in the area, specifically looking at traffic management.

“We will of course be happy to discuss with them the feedback they receive.”
