A planning application has been submitted for a pooch play park in East Kilbride.

The change of use proposal for an Action Petz branch of “secure indoor and outdoor dog play park with doggy day care” has been put to the South Lanarkshire Council planning committee.

Action Petz offer indoor and outdoor dog parks as well as day care and overnight boarding.

They also offer training classes and behavioural consultations for puppies and adult dogs.

The franchise hope to open in Flakefield, an industrial unit in the College Milton Industrial Estate.

However, concerns have been raised about the facility after nearby company Cleaning and Wiping Supplies spoke out about noise issues and fears over “nasty odours” due to dog fouling.

But in a response an Action Petz spokesman noted that “Our business aim is to provide dogs with a fun, safe and secure play without getting lost, stolen or dirty.

“None of the dogs using our facilities will be contained or confined in the outside yard or in any area of the centre.

“All dogs on our premises will have fully supervised access.”

They add that : “The facilities will be temperament assessed to ensure dogs do not present disruptive behaviours which includes excessive barking.”

A high brick wall will ensure it is “impossible” for dogs to escape and that this will also help to prevent dogs from being “visually stimulated” by external factors.

In response to claims of smells coming for the premises, the spokesman said: “The Action Petz franchise of dog play and day care centre centres have been operational for five years across five centres and have never had issues/complaints from either other nearby businesses or any park users regarding unpleasant odours.”They note that they “pride” themselves on keeping their premises “clean at all times.”

They also noted that “all of our centres have dog toileting areas” which “dogs are encouraged to use before being let off the lead around the rest of the park or day care.”

They add that this area and the rest of the centre will be continuously cleaned throughout the day and that centre rules state that dog waste must be cleaned immediately.
