Doctors prescribing more active lifestyle
A new initiative aimed at increasing activity levels is helping the health board to tackle health inequalities.
Launched across South Lanarkshire, the Physical Activity Prescription (PAP) initiative aims to support local residents experiencing a number of health-related conditions.
And it sees the health board and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) health development team working together.
PAP is aimed at helping those struggling with obesity and diabetes, as well as mild to moderate mental health conditions.
It takes the preventative approach to address mental ill-health and related health conditions, engaging the community in regular physical activity to provide a range of health benefits.
David Inglis, health improvement senior, said: “PAP is a great tool enabling GPs, nurses and other primary care professionals to refer people to a range of non-clinical services within the local community.
“The programme recognises that people’s health is determined primarily by a range of social, economic and environmental factors and aims to support individuals to take greater control of their own health and wellbeing.”
It is expected all GP practices taking part will encourage patients to exercise and enjoy the benefits of active health classes.
Improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight loss, mood, confidence, self-esteem and general well-being can be expected, as can improvements in mobility and anxiety.
Dr Steven Zonfrillo believes that by making use of resources locally means that, hopefully, “more investment and opportunities may arise in the future”.
