Councillors to condemn Brexit plans
UK government attempts to force through a no-deal Brexit are set to be condemned by South Lanarkshire councillors.
A motion put forward by the Lib Dem group would see the council issue a“damning rebuke”to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his“blatant assault”on parliamentary democracy.
The group are now calling on councillors from all parties to support the motion and send a message to politicians down south.
Lib Dem group leader Councillor Robert Brown said:“The council has made clear Brexit is a huge risk to its ability to provide vital services.
“The threat is grave and it is immediate. Any type of Brexit will damage our communities, and we are now faced with the devastating prospect of a no-deal departure.
“Decent MPs of all parties have been working together to protect their communities and the country.
“It is outrageous that Boris Johnson and the extremists in his cabinet have abused the Crown’s powers and sought to stop the House of Commons from meeting.
“As the democratically-elected local authority, South Lanarkshire Council has a responsibility to speak out against what is a blatant assault on Britain’s democratic constitution.”
If passed, the council’s official position would be that the 2016 EU referendum “provides no mandate”for Brexit because of the“undeliverable and misleading”promises made during the campaign.
The motion also calls for a People’s Vote as the only way to resolve the current political crisis in the UK.
