Candidates giving their support to our appeal

-

Candidates for the forthcoming General Election have given their overwhelming support to the East Kilbride News Christmas Appeal.

But in the run up to festivities when many will be looking forward to all that comes with it, there is once again a call to end the need for foodbanks.

Labour’s Monique MacAdams told the News: “Christmas, as well as being a joyful time for most people, can be stressful for many other families.

“We need to recognise the fantastic work carried out by groups in East Kilbride such as Loaves and Fishes as well as the many other charities, churches and community organisations.

“What they provide, in delivering help through foodbanks, is invaluable throughout the year but especially at this time of giving.

“The EK News is to be congratulated in highlighting this appeal to all to encourage each of us to proactively help.”

Tory Paul Masterton went on:“For many of us, Christmas is an exciting time of celebration where we look forward to a few days with friends and family.

“But across our communities, there are those for whom the festive period can be extremely tough.

“It is important that we take the time to remember those less fortunate, and this year’s appeal provide us with a way to contribute to those in need to help this time of year be that little bit easier.

“I know the generosity of EK News readers will make a huge difference in helping more families have a magical Christmas this year.”

The SNPs Kirsten Oswald said:“It is great that the EK News are throwing their support behind the Loaves and Fishes Reverse Advent Calendar initiative this year.

“I wholeheartedly commend them for that. I am in awe of the volunteers across Scotland who, like those at Loaves and Fishes, work hard every day to make life that little bit more manageable for folk in difficulty and struggling something that could happen to any one of us.

“But there is simply no getting away from the fact that in this day and age, foodbanks should not be necessary.

“This should be the priority of everyone, and something we can all reflect upon at this time of year.”

Liberal Democrat, Ewan McRobert, added:“I will certainly be supporting the EK News Christmas appeal and I hope all the readers than can afford to do so give generously. Loaves and Fishes do marvellous work. However, it is a sad indictment on society that we need food banks.”
