Lisa Cameron returns to lead parliamentary group for fifth year
East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahgow MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, has been re-elected chairwoman of the Disability All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the fifth year running.
Dr Cameron has set out her agenda for the coming year on disability rights, international aid for children with disability, apprenticeships, accessible housing, transport and sports inclusion.
It comes in the pivotal 25th anniversary year of the Disability Discrimination Act.
The MP said:“I am delighted to be re-elected for the fifth year.
“It is an absolute privilege to be standing up for people with disabilities across the UK and I will continue to push for important legislation that protects and enhances disability rights every step of the way.”
And this week she was one of the lucky ones to get her hands on the FA Cup when it came to Westminster.
In her role as chair of the APPG group Dr Cameron has been working with both local and national football agencies to ensure that there is equality of access to sports for persons with disabilities.
She has been meeting with staff at football grounds as part of her APPG inquiry into Best Practice in Equality Access and was recently welcomed to Celtic FC to see their new sensory room for supporters with autism.
Dr Cameron said:“The FA Cup has come to Parliament but football must reach the public including people with disabilities.
“Far too often disabled fans have no adequate grounds access facilities, toilet facilities, hospitality facilities or break out spaces for those with sensory difficulties.
“The APPG is focused on ensuring equality of access to sporting facilities across the UK for people with disability so that everyone no matter their background can participate in and enjoy sport.”
