‘Persecution of Christians unacceptable’

- ANDREA LAMBROU

After receiving hate mail ahead of the General Election, the town’s MP showed her support for persecuted Christians.

Dr Lisa Cameron attended this year’s Open Doors World Watchlist Event which works in over 60 countries, providing practical support and emergency relief and supporting Christians who suffer for their faith.

Last month the SNP MP’s campaign leaflets were daubed with swastikas and posted back to her in a shocking campaign of hate.

The World Watch List is Open Doors’ annual ranking of the 50 countries where Christians face the most extreme persecution and aims to raise awareness of this global persecution, mobilising prayer, support and action amongst democracies.

Dr Cameron was involved in the last parliamentary term supporting the Bishop of Truro’s Inquiry Report into what the UK Government should be doing to further support Christians worldwide from persecution.

The MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow said: “I was honoured to attend the launch of this year’s World Watch List and hear inspiring accounts from Christians facing persecution around the world.

“As a member of the Christians in Parliament Group, I pledge to continue to use my voice to raise awareness of these issues in parliament and the importance of freedom of religious belief worldwide.”

Meanwhile, Dr Cameron hosted an event in Parliament for the All Party Group Against AntiSemitism so awareness training could be made available to new MPs.

The event included speeches from Community Security Trust, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Holocaust Educational Trust and the APPG Against Anti-Semitism of which Lisa was this week reelected as vice chair.

She added: “Anti-Semitism is a growing concern in politics and across the UK. It is clear that there is considerable anxiety amongst the Jewish community including my local constituents.

“We must ensure that all parties have a zero tolerance approach to anti-Semitism and it was extremely important that awareness of anti-Semitism was raised in a training session within the first few weeks for new and returning MPs.”
