Right on queue
McHungry drivers queue up as fast food favourite reopens its doors
Drive-thru reopening sends drivers into a feeding frenzy
McDonald’s lovers waited in long queues last Thursday morning outside East Kilbride’s two drivethrus.
East Kilbride Queensway and Lees Burn Court reopened at 11am on Thursday, June 3, as drivers headed over to wait in line to indulge their love of the fast food favourite.
There were reports of police outside the Queensway restaurant as they helped manage the traffic and hungry drivers descended on the area.
Returning to trading after the coronavirus shutdown, the fast food favourite announced which Golden Arches branch were reopening only on the morning that service was resuming in order to manage demand.
All drive-thrus at its 924 restaurants in the UK and Ireland were due to be open by June 4.
The chain will also add 75 restaurants to McDelivery via Uber Eats or Just Eat.
The company said that it was working with local authorities and police in the run-up to the reopenings after almost two months’ closure.
McDonald’s, along with its competitors Burger King, KFC and Nando’s, have been trialling phased reopenings of their restaurants, with increased safety measures.
In order to allow for social distancing, there will be fewer employees in kitchens and service areas.
There will also be a limited menu – no breakfast, wrap or milkshakes – with reduced hours in place (11am10pm).
A spokesman for McDonald’s said: “Our teams are adjusting to new safety and hygiene procedures, which will help them to work safely and social distance. We appreciate your continued patience.
“We are delighted to be returning to communities across the UK and Ireland.”
Other drive-thru locations in Lanarkshire to open up last week included: Hamilton, Wishaw, Airdrie, Coatbridge, and Bellshill.
Customers are being asked to limit their spend to £25 and use contactless payment.
