I AM DOING IT FOR GRAN
Caring Katie does skydive to raise cancer cash
A self-confessed thrill seeker took to the skies raising hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity in memory of her beloved gran.
Katie Kerr, 18, decided to do a 10,000 feet skydive – having already done bungee jumping.
It was a way not only to raise funds to help in the battle against pancreatic cancer but to mark the 10 years since she lost her gran, Agnes MacKenzie.
She raised nearly £500 from the “incredible ”feat at Fife airport.
Prior to the skydive Katie, from St Leonards, also completed a 24-day walk challenge walking from East Kilbride to the Hydro as well as Glasgow airport as part of it.
Katie told the News: “There have been people who I am close to of late who have lost family members to pancreatic cancer and it was the 10 year anniversary since my gran’s death, so I thought it was the perfect time to do something special.
“I have done bungee jumping in the past but never a skydive - so I thought why not.
“I love anything like and I am not scared by them.
“It was absolutely incredible and I loved it. I would definitely do it again.
“And I am sure my gran would have been proud of me – she was always so incredibly supportive.”
Katie, who is going to Stirling University to study French and Spanish, has fond memories of spending time with Agnes as a child.
“She was really lovely and caring and I did spend a lot of time with her, going to her house, ”she went on.
“I also remember seeing her in hospital but I was too young at the time to fully understand what was going on.
“I have a lot of good memories and I am delighted to have raised as much as I have which will hopefully help beat this disease one day.”
The walking challenge has also raised
£245 and saw Katie really getting out and about.
She added: “The 24-day walk challenge you can basically set your own limits.
“I set myself a total target of 100 miles but, not knowing how far I could go in a day, I did over 100 miles in the first week alone. So I did a bit more than I initially thought!
“The walk to Glasgow Airport took me six -and-a half-hours but it was worth it.
“I really enjoyed the walking to be honest and all my family and friend have really got behind me and supported me – I can’t thank everyone enough.”
