Flood hell for pupils
A burst water main in East Kilbride closed a primary school and nursery with widespread disruption to supplies elsewhere.
Scottish Water confirmed a 12 inch main on Greenhills Road ruptured on Monday morning.
It is understood the burst was between Lickprivick Road and Stroud Road with a stretch of Greenhills Road closed for a period.
And South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) said with no water for toilets in St Vincent’s Primary and Ballerup Nursery, they had to close, however they both opened as normal yesterday.
Homes in the Gardenhall, Greenhills and Whitehills areas were affected.
Residents in Lindsayfield also took to social media to say they experienced a loss of pressure.
Greenhills Primary was also affected, with disruption to Rosaburn Care Home and nearby St Vincent de Paul’s church.
Pictures on Facebook also show large amounts of water near to the primary school and care home – who said the water stopped “just in time” to prevent further disruption for residents.
SLC have confirmed there has been external flooding at St Vincent’s Primary.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “A burst occurred on a 12 inch main at Greenhills roundabout in East Kilbride and caused an interruption to supply for some residents in the Gardenhall, Greenhills and Whitehills areas.
“The burst was isolated and a repair undertaken. We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result and thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding.”
Lynn Sherry, head of education at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “The water from the burst main has affected Greenhills and St Vincent’s Primary Schools and Ballerup Nursery.
“In particular, there has been external flooding at St Vincent’s and the water supply to St Vincent’s and Ballerup stopped.
“We worked to address all issues, including delivering bottled water and additional hand sanitiser but, with no water for the toilets, St Vincent’s and Ballerup closed.
“We were in constant communication with Scottish Water.”
