Another nearly moment for Marc Warren at Scottish Open

East Kilbride golfer Marc Warren came within a shot of a chance to win the Scottish Open at the weekend.

Warren (pictured, left) followed three birdies in four holes from the 12th with an eagle -3 at the 16th, briefly moving into a share of the lead in the final round.

However, he found the rough at the last hole while sitting one behind, and ended up with a bogey for 66, finishing joint-fourth on nine-under-par.

The 39-year-old came agonisingly close to victory in 2012 when he let a three-shot lead slip over the final four holes at Castle Stuart, and finished third in 2014 and fourth in 2015.

But Warren, who had been battling hamstring and lower back issues for months, was pain-free at The Renaissance and was pleased with his performance in North Berwick as he found himself in the mix again

He said:“It was frustrating, but overall it was a great run at it.

“I played well all week, I had a tough side of the draw on Thursday and Friday and then Saturday was brutal for everyone, so to have four rounds under-par was great.

“It felt like such a tough week weather wise that you were just grinding out pars most of the time, so to go on a run like that on the back nine was great fun, very exciting.

“To have three birdies and an eagle on five holes was great to close the gap, and at that time you start to think about winning, but it was really bunched scoring-wise, so to move through the field and get top-four was great.

“It was a strong performance off the tee, so I think that was the base for four good scores.”

Warren is now looking forward to a trip to Surrey for The BMW PGA Championship, the third Rolex Series stage of the 2020 Race to Dubai. He added:“It’s another massive tournament and another Rolex event, so it’s a good time to hit some form.

“I go into that with a lot of confidence, only positives to take from last week. I think when you play in conditions as tough as that and have four rounds under-par it shows every department of your game is strong.

“It will be another tough test because the weather isn’t looking great. The golf course in isolation is a tough test anyway, but my game in all departments is in good shape.”
