New Queensway blending facility
An East Kilbride distillery has won a top accolade.
Distell International – which is currently expanding its operations with a £15million build on its Queens way site in the town – secured the Scottish Engineering Outstanding Achievement Award.
Managing director Fraser Thornton received the award from Scottish Engineering recently at a socially-distanced ceremony.
And a number of its brands also came out on top with Bunnahabhain 25 year-old awarded this year’s trophy for Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky 25 years and under from the The International Wine and Spirit Competition.
Speaking about the Scottish Engineering award, a Distell spokeswoman said: “This award was given to Distell International in recognition of the long-term planning and capital investment the company has undertaken to grow our portfolio of brands, combined with our investment in people and infrastructure.
“Additionally, it recognises the ongoing investment in supply chain infrastructure which is now best in class.
“This is fantastic third party recognition for the step change journey we have been on as a business and one which will continue in the years ahead.”
Work is nearing completion on its stateof-the-art blending and warehouse facility in East Kilbride.
It is due to complete at the end of December when Muir Construction will hand the site over to Distell.
Inventory from its current site in Airdrie will be transferred, which is expected to take approximately three months.
Twelve staff based in Airdrie will be transferring to the new site and they are currently going through a training programme to ensure t hey have the relevant skills .
Once fully complete, there will be blending capability and warehousing for up to 47,000 casks.
Building work on the former BSR factory site sparked debate in the town before Distell confirmed the expansion of their operations.
