Dumb dumpers wreak havoc

Locals fume as dumb dumpers turn their streets into trash strewn eyesore

- GREGOR FARQUHARSON

Two recent instances of flytipping have angered East Kilbride residents – leaving them wondering what can be done to keep their area tidy.

Anonymous sources reported the fly-tipping to the News, fuming at the sight of the rubbish left in the town.

One resident, who asked not to be named, told us he felt the problem in the area has got worse over the last six years.

He said: “Over the last six years or so, it seems like fly-tipping has become a bigger problem in East Kilbride.

“The waste on Telford Road is becoming an issue.

“It is commercial waste such as sofas and fridges.

“These have just been dumped on the side of the road with no care whatsoever and have been there for some time.

“It looks like someone has just cleared out a flat and rather than dispose correctly, has done it in the easiest way they could think of.

“There is also a lack of effort from South Lanarkshire Council in regards to clearing the rubbish when it is reported.

“The area is going to become a diabolical mess soon; something has to be done.”

There has also been fly- tipping issues reported in the Glenburn Road area of the town.

People have been dumping household waste and tyres in the woodlands, making the place unappealing for the people who live and work there.

Another resident added: “Flytipping has become a routine problem in this area and we have noticed it has started getting worse since the pandemic started.

“It can really endanger the local wildlife, and it is also horrible to look at for the people in the area.

“People usually come up the back roads and dump all their rubbish so that they aren’t caught.

“I managed to catch one car flytipping. I went and spoke to them and they quickly cleaned up their mess. The place is starting to look a tip at times.”

Alistair McKinnon, Head of Facilities Waste and Grounds Services at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “I can confirm that our street cleansing team are aware of this illegally dumped waste and removal has been arranged.

“Fly-tipping is anti-social and unacceptable.

“We will always take steps to identify those responsible and significant fines can be imposed.

“There is no excuse for this behaviour.

“Our Household Waste and Recycling Centres are open – the nearest being at Peel Park, East Kilbride – and special (bulk) uplifts can be arranged if kerbside collection is required.

“I would urge members of the public to report such incidents to Environmental Services through the council’s website at www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk, or alternatively on 0303 123 1015”
