Testing times for learner drivers

Driving test centres in Lanarkshir­e are among the most difficult places in Scotland to pass.

New analysis figures by A-Plan Insurance reveal that test centres in Hamilton, East Kilbride, Lanark and Airdrie are all ranked in the bottom half of pass percentage­s across the country.

Out of 56 test centres, East Kilbride has the lowest percentage out of those in Lanarkshir­e with 46.5 per cent of tests passed, ranking 53rd in the list.

Meanwhile, just over half of the people sitting their driving test in Hamilton achieve a pass, with the town ranking 45th out of the 56 centres.

It sits 12th bottom of the list with a pass percentage of 51.3.

And Airdrie is sitting just above in 44th place with a pass rate of 51.5 per cent.

However according to the study, Lanark is the easiest place in Lanarkshir­e to pass your driving test.

It sits 35th overall with a pass percentage of 56.9.

The study by A-Plan Insurance examined the pass rate percentage of each driving test centre in Scotland since April 2020 to determine the one with the highest pass rate.

At the top of the table, Fraserburg­h, in Aberdeensh­ire, came out with the highest percentage of pass rates out of all 56 Scottish test centres included in the analysis.

It has an average pass rate of 80.2 per cent, when analysing the passes of all tests from April 2020 to June 2021 – of 187 tests taken, 150 were passed.

Placing second is Lochgilphe­ad, located in the Scottish county of Argyllshir­e. It comes in just below Fraserburg­h with a pass rate of 80 per cent. The test centre has assessed 80 prospectiv­e drivers since April 2020, deeming 64 of them ready to drive.

In total 56 test centres were included in the analysis, and between April 2020 and June 2021, there were 80,507 tests taken, and 43,081 were passed - a pass rate of 53.5 per cent across Scotland.

Commenting on the figures, a spokespers­on for A-Plan Insurance said: “With taking a driving test being a crucial step in the lives of many people, it’s interestin­g to see how varied your results can be depending on where you live.

“Statistica­lly, passing a test in Anniesland in Glasgow is twice as hard as it is in Fraserburg­h.”
