YM Caley rally to sink Giffnock

-

Graeme Robertson’s EKYM Caley side went some way to atoning for last week’s dismal display at Eaglesham with a stirring performance against a very strong Giffnock outfit.

This was the first time the Caledonian League side had played at Kirktonholme since November and it was heartening to see a good turnout as fans witnessed an end-to-end match.

Giffnock took the lead after 25 minutes when they were awarded a throw in level with YM’s six yard box. From the throw in, centre forward Jason Rae back-headed the ball goal wards and his unorthodox effort paid dividends as it found the net.

YM levelled the score 10 minutes later when Ciaran Hughes put James Cameron in possession wide right. His cross to the far post was netted by Kyle Rankin from close range.

All square at the interval was a fair result and both teams went all out for another goal in the second half - and it was YM who achieved that.

Late in the game, Craig Tocher raced into the left side of the penalty box before off-loading to Cammy McCulloch, who showed commitment to hold off two defenders and get his shot away into the net for the winner.

In the dying stages, YM had two more big chances but Giffnock goalkeeper Lee Nelson saved well.

The result keeps YM second in the Caledonian League behind Dumbarton Academy.

On Saturday YM travel to Bannockburn to play Milton in the Douglas Smith League Cup.

Meanwhile, on Friday evening YM 35s defeated Possil YM 5-1 in a league match. Willie Holms and David Winters both bagged a brace, with Robbie Winters notching the other goal.

This Saturday YM’s Greater Glasgow Premier side host league leaders Dumbarton St. Pats in round three of the Challenge Cup at Kirktonholme, kick off 2pm.
