EKYM sink Eaglesham in derby day thriller

-

East Kilbride YM player of the year Ross McDonagh bagged a brace as the club claimed the derby bragging rights during a nine-goal thriller with Eaglesham.

In an end-to-end battle, YM prevailed 5-4 in the Caledonian League clash to win their penultimate game of the campaign.

Dean Murdoch netted Craig Fry’s excellent through ball to give YM an early lead and McDonagh soon made it 2-0 for the hosts.

Eaglesham pulled a goal back but Cammy McCulloch restored YM’s two goal advantage before McDonagh extended YM’s lead from the penalty spot soon after to make it 4-1.

Eaglesham rallied once again scoring their second goal just before the interval.

YM were rattled by this comeback and Eaglesham took full advantage, scoring a third goal to really put the pressure on YM.

Craig Tocher eased the nerves by scoring YM’s fifth goal, but before the end Eaglesham scored a fourth of the day to ensure an exciting finish.

YM managed to hold out and secure the points ahead of playing their final league match of the campaign tonight (Wednesday) against Thorn AFC at Kirktonholme , kick-off 7pm.

Meanwhile, the club hosted their player of the year awards last week.

The Caledonian team’s Players’ Player of year was McDonagh, who also won top goal scorer with 34 goals.

Steven Tyczynski won the manager’s player of the year prize. Top training points winner was Craig Fry, followed by Tyczynski and Fraser Campbell.

In the YM GGPL team, the manager’s players of the year were Lee Ferguson and Josh Cairns.

Elsewhere, YM 35s lost 2-1 to Easterhouse 35s on Friday evening with David Winters scoring their only goal.

Finally, on Sunday afternoon the Angus McConnell Memorial Tournament for Children, organised by Ian Shaw of EK Old Parish Church, took place at Kirktonholme with St. Kenneth’s/St.Bride’s winning the event.

All children loved playing in the competition and at the end received a goody bag and hot dog, courtesy of Graeme Robertson.
