Community fridge is a cool way to stop waste

- NICOLA FINDLAY

A climate action charity launched a new community fridge initiative recently in the fight against food waste.

Strathaven Community Fridge has been set up to prevent food from being wasted.

Good quality surplus food is collected from local retailers through Climate Action Strathaven (CAS), which is then made available for local people to take what they can use, free of charge.

There is a selection of frozen foods, chilled food and fresh fruit and vegetables available for anyone to take in a scheme that is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund – Awards for All.

The Strathaven Community Fridge project offers access to nutritious food for everyone, regardless of circumstances – it’s the perfect way to save money and reduce food waste.

Mick Wilson, CAS project lead, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference and I am very excited to be involved in such an innovative project.

“Reducing food waste whilst

benefiting the local community is something that I am extremely passionate about and I can’t wait to see the project grow.”

Rhona MacLeod, from Strathaven, said: “I think the community fridge is an excellent idea. I hope to see such an approach

to reducing food waste replicated in communities across Scotland.”

Carly, Co-op Pioneer, said: “I’m just so excited by the Strathaven Community Fridge project. The Coop has long since recognised the scale of the climate crisis we are all facing and have acted accordingly.

“Our Ten-Point Plan sets out a pathway to achieving net zero by 2040 and the food share programme is a huge part of that. The fact that it allows us to work with awesome organisations like CAS just makes it all the more worthwhile.

“Reducing food waste and food poverty at the same time is just fantastic.”

Caroline, Strathaven Sainsbury’s department manager, said: “It is great to be working with CAS on such an exciting idea that will make a huge impact on food waste in the town.”
