A litter picking group is back sprucing up the town ahead of spring – and a Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign.

East Kilbride Community Litter Pickers are back out in force, with winter hopefully drawing closer to its end.

Formed at the beginning of 2021, dedicated and hardy volunteers have collected thousands upon thousands of bags of rubbish throughout the town.

Now they are getting behind Spring Clean Scotland 2023 and are encouraging more folk to come on board.

Stuart Harris from the EK Community Litter Pickers said: “From March 17 to April 17 it’s Spring Clean Scotland 2023 – where organisations and individuals will do what they can to help by litter picking in their local area.

“So we have identified a few very public areas across EK that could make a big difference.

“We are having Saturday and Sunday events, so that those with morning commitments over the weekend can join in.

“The campaign was really well supported last year and we are hoping for the same again this year.

“For obvious reasons there are less folk out and about litter picking over the worst of the weather in winter, but we are very much back out there, doing what we can to make East Kilbride better for everyone.”

Areas the group will target include the back of Murray Square, Westwood Square, the Queensway and Maxwellton Road. Keep Scotland Beautiful say last year’s Spring Clean saw thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves and organise more than 100 events – and this year they want to do even better.

For more information about dates and times in EK for clean-ups, keep an eye on the EK Litter Pickers Facebook page and for more on Spring Clean Scotland, go to their website where you can find details of how to get involved.
