Council donates to quake fund

- SHANNON MILMINE

South Lanarkshire Council is to donate thousands of pounds to victims of the Turkey and Syria earthquake.

The council will give £15,000 to the victims of the earthquake that has hit parts of Turkey and Syria, which has killed over 40,000 and left thousands more injured and homeless.

And the money will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which is leading the UK response to the earthquake.

Council leader Joe Fagan thanked all party leaders at South Lanarkshire Council for agreeing to make the donation.

He said:“The council has a proud history of helping people in times of crisis. While our clear focus is always on the support we provide local residents and our own communities, I don’t think any reasonable person could begrudge this donation.

“We face many problems and hardships, but we are lucky not to live somewhere that falls victim to such a devastating natural disaster. For too many victims, this has come after years of suffering in war too.

“I want to thank all the political leaders for agreeing to this emergency contribution to the DEC, which is being made on behalf of all the citizens of South Lanarkshire, as we stand in solidarity with our fellow human beings in their time of greatest need.”

The earthquake hit parts of southern and central Turkey and western Syria on February 6. Over 114,000 people have been left injured, over two million are displaced and the events have affected at least 24 million people.

Neighbouring North Lanarkshire Council will also make a £15,000 charitable donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to assist with the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal.
